“A drawing is like a shooting star. A meteoroid becomes visible to our eyes after it penetrates the atmosphere at high speed. We don’t see the meteoroid itself, we see a glowing streak of light when the meteor has already burned up. What I draw arises on a physical level, translates into movement and thus penetrates into our perceptible world. It leaves a trail of energy. The lines on paper are a linear side effect of something that is fundamentally non-linear.” Sara Vermeylen, 2022

“Sara Vermeylen’s latest paintings represent a change in style in her oeuvre. They are more aggressive and more pictorial than her previous work. Something has also shifted in content. They originated during a period of forced isolation due to an operated foot and were inspired by the life and work of Andy Warhol. Graphic elements appear in the paintings, coming from the packaging of medicines. Autobiographical events and portraits of her family members are processed, but also scenes from films, body parts and banal daily activities such as waiting in a waiting room. Despite the scarce use of color, the result are bursting with color and appear neurotic. The paintings are a testimony of contemporary life and its inner turmoil.” Herman van Ingelgem, 2022

“My work is a result of the fact that I am not a frog. Unlike the frog, I balance on the tipping point between stoicism and savagery. I make large, oxygenated drawings to capture the energy of that momentum.” Sara Vermeylen, 2017
